Aspects of Our Existence in The Canterbury Tales Essay

Aspects of Our Existence in The Canterbury Tales Through out the history of our own existence men and women alike have pondered and questioned whether there truly exists a force that controls all aspects of our existence. In order to answer these questions men have gone on spiritual quest for not only knowledge of god, but to shed light on our own lives. Men like Geoffrey Chaucer take us on a quest to dig deep within our souls to answer our own question. In Chaucer’s collection of tales entitled, The Canterbury Tales The tales deal with a group of pilgrims of all social classes in search for forgiveness to the shrine of Thomas a Becket. The tale begins at the house of the carpenter John who is an aged man. Who marries a young girl named Alison who is only eighteen-years old. Chaucer intentionally does this to show that the age difference is a power to be reckoned with. Chaucer himself describes the contrast of age when he says, â€Å"She was a girl of eighteen years of age. Jealous he was and kept her in a cage, for he was old and she was wild an young; he thought himself quiet likely to be stung.† Chaucer perfectly describes the youth and its effect upon the character. The other character Nicholas the Galland, is described by Chaucer as, â€Å"This lad was know as Nicholas the Galland, and making love in secret was his talent, for he was very close and sly, and took advantage of his meek and girlish look.† Chaucer her foreshadows the relation ship between the two young characters by describing their flaws such as youth and beauty in Alison and Slyness in Nicholas. Types of Lies People Tell Free Essays

TYPES OF LIES PEOPLE TELL Lies are part of human life. Nobody can deny that he or she has never lied before. Everybody lies. We will write a custom essay sample on Types of Lies People Tell or any similar topic only for you Order Now People start lying at around age 4 to 5 when they gain an awareness the power of language. Sometimes they can get away with lying, sometimes they can not. But everone knows that lying is a bad habit. Yet many people have no clue how big of a problem it is. Sadly, lying can become a destructive habit whatever your purpose is. According to the purpose to tell lies, they can be divided into three types; beneficial lies, spiteful lies , neutral lies. The first type of lies I find it good are beneficial lies. These lies usually mean to help and they are harmless that are meant to be tactful or polite. People prefer to tell it to protect the other people or not to make them unhappy. They help avoid hurt and sadness. For example, a father lie to the children that their beloved mother is living happily in heaven. People may think that this is a cheating, but they ought to praise these people who tell beneficial lies instead of criticizing them. The second type of lies are spiteful lies. These lies always mean to gain benefit and hurt people. People tell spiteful lies to protect themselves, look good,, gain financially or socially and avoid punishment. For example, as we usually see in supermarkets sellers lie to their customers to talk them into buying the fake foods. Their aims are only their personal gains, they do not care the other people. The third type of lies are neutral lies. These lies are just meant nothing and are much simpler. People tell these lies to not to Show their private things. For example, you asked a person about her private life or private things, she may avoid answering the truth by telling a lie. One hand, she does not want to share it with you, on the other hand she feels that she has to answer it, so she tells lie. Have you ever told any one of these lies? You may be able to lie for a while, but in the end it will come back to haunt you. It’s important to know that there is freedom in living and telling the truth. It may be difficult at first, but as we know, â€Å"The truth shall set you free. † How to cite Types of Lies People Tell, Essay examples

Sabir Warsame Essays - Behavior, Abuse, Persecution, Human Behavior

Sabir Warsame Mrs. Riddell ENG 3U-22 August 3 , 2017 Sabir Warsame Its proven that Bullies love an audience. I witnessed a lot of people getting bullied during middle school I wasn't one to get involved but I would quickly advise an adult, peer , or even my family about this. Bullying is a horrible thing you should stand up against bullying when you see it occur . Be come someone's hero, t oday I will be speaking about my experience during seventh grade in middle school. There was a guy who loved to push people and slap them while they weren't looking and his group of friends would just laugh and support his act, it wasn't until he slapped this kid who I would usually play basketball with, and this kid had a hearing aid and was a great kid to be around he had a great vibe. I didn't want to be like the rest and just walk away or just laugh at point fingers so I slapped the bully and said 'how does this feel jerk'', and the bully's friends made a huge situation about it and told the bully to fight me , then the bully attacked me and surprisingly the kid who got slapped put the bully in some sort of mixed martial art move and shocked all of us. The bully had apologized to me and the kid he slapped and we all laughed about it at the end and talked it out. For the rest of the school year this bully I can now call my friend stopped bullying people, it was a lesson to learn really. I felt like the role I played in this situation could have been handled much better instead of slapping the bully who was twice my size. I should have let an adult in the building know and it could have been handled in a much better way. Bullying is a horrible thing that needs to stop'' Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it''. Remember to always Be an active bystander and help to stop bullying. Use your power to let oth ers know that bullying is not ok .

Supply and Demand and Price Elasticity Essays

Supply and Demand and Price Elasticity Essays Supply and Demand and Price Elasticity Essay Supply and Demand and Price Elasticity Essay Supply and Demand and Price Elasticity Team D John Gayden, Linda Petteway ECO 212 Principles of Economics November 22, 2010 Keith Watts There are many things adversities that cause the rise and fall of supply and demand. For example, if Crab prices rises, a Red Lobster sales price will increase also on crabs this will cause the demand of crabs to decrease this is price of input. When crab production become abundant again causing more crabs to over flow Red Lobster the market price on crabs will decreases this creates a good technological change. When Red Lobster menu changes by adding a variety of plates that do not include crabs when the crab prices are high they focuses on selling the other entrees available this is known as prices of substitutes in production. Another way change affects supply and demand is by the number of firms or business selling same or similar products in the market. These new business bring more competition and prices may vary depending on the supply in demand. When a business anticipates that the prices of the goods or service will increase from what the price is today that allows the business or firm to increase the current price this also causes change to affect supply and demand (Hubbard OBrien, 2010). The price of gas is another Market this is very unstable and has no balance of supply and demand. The changes in prices and quantity affect the equilibrium in positive and negative ways. There can be talks of a hurricane in Cuba and it will cause the price of gas to go up 50 cents. Holidays or warm weather cause the price of gas to sky rocket. There seem to be no one with a hand on who control these prices. The main form of reading material used to be physical books. The development of the Apple iPad has vastly increasd the ease and amount of free reading material available to consumers. The iPad price ranges between $499 up to $900 (Glenn, 2010). The iPad is touch screen mobile laptop with no keyboard and high screen resolution. The iPad offer consumers the ability to have an e-reader with color screen and much more. The typical reaction of this vent should have caused the prices of reading material to drop. The decrease in quantity demanded of books should have caused the price of them to drop. The loss of consumers was a negative cost for suppliers. The market reacted to the loss of demand by shifting the form of books. The suppliers shifted the equilibrium back to a more self-beneficial market in several ways. We will base this on one consumer’s pers onal observations. The first way suppliers used was to print hard back book at higher prices and not print the cheaper paperback form until at least nine months later. They also made the price of new online reading material the same prices as a new book. The suppliers also decreased the quantity supplied of hard back books causing an increase in demand. Market equilibrium is a constant balance of what consumers want and what suppliers deliver. References Hubbard, R. , OBrien, A. (2010). Economics (3rd ed. ). Boston , MA: Perason Hall. Because it removes barriers and makes things easier to find, it has led to a lengthening of the market. For example, if you like classical trombone concertos, it used to be that you’d have to scour the record store and probably buy an entire album, even though it was just one or two tracks you really wanted to listen to. Thanks to the internet, you can find as many of those as you want on SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Spotify, or even YouTube. There are an increasingly infinite array of products available in a particular sector, meaning customers are split up into smaller and smaller groups. Obviously, there will be superstars- a ubiquitous product that blows up, or someone with the right combination of talent and luck that comes along at just the right time and captures a big following. Kevin’s point is that you can’t reasonably aim to replicate superstar success. What you can do, however, is figure out what level of support will work to make your success sustainable. What you want to do is work on building a group of 1,000 True Fans. Or 500. Or 3,000. The key is that it’s hard, but it’s achievable. As Kevin puts it, â€Å"You can count to 1,000.† So what is a True Fan? A True Fan is defined as someone who will purchase anything and everything you produce. They will drive 200 miles to see you sing. They will buy the super deluxe re-issued hi-res box set of your stuff even though they have the low-res version. They have a Google Alert set for your name. - Mike Masnick It’s this level of loyalty and passion that we can build with our social media following. Pro Tip:  Figure out how many True Fans you need to be sustainable. A good go-to way to think about this is to assume each will spend $100 on you per year. Start counting. 1. Change The Way You Think About Social Media The social media ground game has evolved. Back in the wild west days of social media, the only numbers that mattered were followers, likes, and shares. It didn’t matter how you got the followers, as long as that number was big. The same how-to was floating around in everyone’s heads: Build followers Get likes Profit The world has become so number-obsessed. You even saw people like Klout trying to develop an algorithm to score influence. What was lost in all the frenzy was a basic understanding of what has made social media a part of our everyday lives. Social media is valuable because it helps you learn, communicate, and engage with other people. You use social media to have conversations. Recommended Reading: How To Get Your Content In Front Of The Right Audience At The Right Time How To Delight Your Marketing Target Audience To Boost Conversions I’m a huge baseball fan, and social media gives me access to up-to-the-minute information in a way that I’d never get in a newspaper. When I think about what I like the most, it’s being able to see a variety of perspectives about a particular play or trade, from players, scouts, superfans, and reporters, and being able to talk to them about it. It’s the insider experience that is valuable to me. Pro Tip: Take the time to think about what you use social media to do, and why you use it the way you do. Does that insight change the way you could communicate with your customers? 2. Engage With Your Followers To Make Them Loyal Fans The biggest mistake most marketers make is thinking of social media as a broadcast channel. They think it’s about sending out your message, about repetition and variation  as if it’s just another form of TV. What they don’t do enough is listen. Instead, use these tips to better engage with your followers: Get smaller.  Instead of trying to broadcast to a large, general audience, narrow your focus to interacting with a small, specific audience. Who do you want to talk to? Focus on your customers social streams. Begin by listening. Have a conversation. Tell stories.  Stories are what get people engaged and emotionally connected. A story is something unique, personal, and engaging. Stories let us see the people, idea, or values that you represent. Social Media Examiner has a great guide to using stories in your social media marketing. Show your face.  Use visual content to get attention. Study after study shows that a post attached to a strong visual is more likely to get shared. More importantly, it lets us see behind the curtain. We will connect better with you as a  person than a brand, so don’t be afraid to show your face. As Kevin put it very clearly: "Understand this isn’t ‘look at me, look how cool I am’ content, this is perhaps just the opposite if it is to connect. This is 'look at me, look how much I care, look how regular I am, look at why I might be the perfect person to guide you to the result you are seeking.'" Have conversations.  Talk to people, ask questions, and find ways to get engaged. Show that you are interested in what others have to say, and not just obsessed with selling something. Shutterstock has a great guide for creatives on how to have more authentic conversations  on social media. Pro Tip: Don’t broadcast, blindly flailing into the social media abyss. Be specific about who you want to talk to, lead with listening, and start having a conversation. A Loyal Following Comes From Being A Real Person In her useful guide to building a loyal following on social media, Mei Pak offers this incredibly wise piece of insight: Building a successful creative business means polarizing the people that find you. They are either your target customer or they’re not. - Mei Pak It’s natural to be cautious about putting yourself out there because it can seem pretty risky. You might come off wrong, or miscommunicate, or make a fool of yourself. But while that’s off-putting to some people, it will make others fall in love with you. As long as you show vulnerability and admit mistakes when you make them, you have nothing to lose. Achieving this successfully requires making sure you’re clear about your values. Decide what’s important early on, and it becomes easier to know what to post about. If an event is happening nearby, you could post a shout-out, or even share a photo or video from it. Shared values are going to attract your most loyal customers. Finally, make sure that you keep upbeat. As Mei says: Present and focus on the positive points so you don’t sound like a whiner. - Mei Pak That doesn’t mean you can’t post about something you’re struggling with, but try to stay constructive and positive to get people to root for you. Pro Tip:  Find ways to make your posts more personal. Talk about what’s going on in your neighborhood, talk about what you love, keep positive, and have a conversation.
